Developing and scanning

Hey there,

if you ever wanted to start developing and scanning film at home, you might find my new Youtube Video useful. In this video I tried to sum up the process of developing black and white and colour film alongside the stuff you need to get to do it. The video is in german, because I’m not comfortable talking english in front of the camera. So if you’re interested, here is a quick summary of the video in english.

I start by stating the pros and cons of developing film on your own and give a disclaimer that everything I say is my subjective opinion.

After that you see what you need for film development. If you want to, just switch on the subtitles. They’re quite ok for automatic subtitles. When you’re done getting all the stuff you need you can start developing. Black and white chemicals are mixed in one time solutions if you use the ones I use. Amaloco AM-74 (no ad) can be mixed at 1+15 and is used for one film. The Amaloco X55 fixer is mixed at 1+7 and can be used for about 3 films. When you check the massive dev chart for your film and the Developer you can get to work. The process is explained ok-ish in my video. For colour film you’ll need a bit more equipment and other chemicals. The chemicals are used differently as you mix 1 Liter solutions which are used for up to 16 films. It’s very important to use clean water for keeping the chemicals fresh for as long as possible.

After developing your film and hanging it to dry, you can start scanning. I use an Epson V600 Photo scanner with Silverfast 9. I use this software because I can scan my negatives in the DNG format which is a raw format with as many details as possible. After scanning I use Lightroom Classic and Negative Lab Pro to edit and export my negatives and then that’s it basically. At first I was a bit confused with Negative Lab Pro, but Nate, the founder has posted some very good tutorials that everyone can understand. Unfortunately right now Negative Lab Pro only works Adobe Lightroom Classic, but there is a standalone versione of Negative Lab Pro on the horizon which is huuuuge.

I hope my video helps some people.

Have fun and please leave a comment or a like.
